Consequences of Seizing Frozen Russian Assets: Belgian Prime Minister Reveals

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has stated that the seizure of frozen Russian assets may constitute a violation of international law, something that has never occurred even during the Second World War. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing his remarks from a speech in parliament.

“This is a potential violation of international law. We have never done something like this. Even during the Second World War, such a thing never happened,” De Wever asserted.

He emphasized that if a decision were to be made, the financial risks must be borne by the entire European Union, as the compensation amounts determined by the courts could significantly exceed the value of the seized assets.

The Belgian Prime Minister also noted that the leadership of the European Commission has yet to provide a credible text concerning guarantees related to the seizure of Russian assets.
