Sanctions Against Russia Could Harm Georgia's Economy, Kaladze Says
The Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling "Georgian Dream" party, Kakha Kaladze, has questioned the viability of calls for sanctions against Russia, stating that such measures could harm the Georgian economy, according to Imedi.
Kaladze deemed the imposition of sanctions against Russia as unrealistic, pointing out that the European countries urging Tbilisi to adopt such measures are themselves maintaining active economic ties with Moscow.
“What sanctions should we impose against Russia? It is the same representatives of certain European countries who are encouraging us to sanction them while they themselves are engaged in extensive trade with Russia. Look at the statistics from recent years; observe their economic turnover with Russia. Are we fools?” he stated.
Kaladze also expressed the opinion that sanctions imposed by Georgia would have a negligible impact on the Russian economy but could adversely affect the welfare of their own country and its citizens.
