Constraining Factor for Russia: Germany's Defense Minister Makes Statement
Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius believes that mandatory medical examinations for all men aged 18 will serve as a constraining factor for Russia in determining military service eligibility categories. The politician's interview was published in the Bild newspaper.
“If we conduct examinations again for all men of the same age and collect data on those suitable for military service, this will also be noticed in Russia. In other words, this is also a constraining factor,” he stated.
According to him, Germany will be ready by mid-2027. “At that time, we will be able to conduct medical examinations across the country again,” he added.
To strengthen the Bundeswehr, the German Defense Minister has developed a bill concerning new rules for army recruitment. The bill does not imply the immediate reinstatement of conscription in Germany. According to the document, from 2026, all young citizens of Germany will receive questionnaires regarding their desire to serve in the Bundeswehr. Completing the questionnaire will be mandatory for men and voluntary for women. Corresponding candidates will be invited to the selection process.
Starting from July 1, 2027, all 18-year-old boys will be called for mandatory medical examination to determine their military service eligibility category, even if they do not decide to serve voluntarily in the army. Thus, the German Ministry of Defense expects to gather data on the suitability for military service of men of conscription age.
