Sullivan: 'I believe Ukraine should determine its own fate'
Ukraine must independently decide to relinquish territories to resolve the conflict. This opinion was expressed by Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, during an interview on ABC.
"I believe that Ukraine itself must determine its fate, and its fate cannot be imposed from outside, including by the United States," he stated.
Regarding territory, security, and other issues, he said, "I will not speak to that. I think Zelensky should discuss this since we are talking about his country," Sullivan added.
Sullivan emphasized that Kyiv understands that the conflict will ultimately be resolved through negotiations. "Throughout 2024, we have been actively engaging with Zelensky and his team, discussing what those negotiations might specifically look like," the American official remarked.
It is worth noting that in an interview with Sky News on November 29, President Vladimir Zelensky allowed for the controlled territories by Kyiv to be placed under NATO's 'umbrella' to halt the conflict's 'hot phase.' As later noted by the publication Strana, this marked Zelensky's first statement since February 2022, indicating he is ready to end the conflict without reclaiming lost territories.
