Armenia Has High Seismic Vulnerability: Ghazaryan
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia, Vahe Ghazaryan, has sent a message on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of the Seismic Protection Service.
“In the field of disaster risk management, the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasizes seismic protection. Active work is underway to modernize the service, also in cooperation with international partners. The employees of the Seismic Protection Service system have done and continue to do everything possible to ensure seismic safety, preventing a strong earthquake from turning into a nationwide disaster, as happened in December 1988. Taking into account the lessons of the disastrous Spitak earthquake, a unified state structure was established on July 17, 1991, whose main purpose was to reduce the seismic risk to the state and its population, and to ensure seismic safety. This goal remains relevant today.
Armenia has a high level of seismic vulnerability, therefore, the role of the Service in reducing seismic risk, assessing the impacts of strong earthquakes, educating the population on protective behaviors against earthquakes, and coordinating the search and rescue operations for earthquake victims is invaluable. I would like to thank you, dear colleagues, for your dedicated daily work and once again congratulate you on your professional day,” the message reads.
