NATO to Expand in the Black Sea and Eastern Balkans
NATO members announced at the summit in Washington that they intend to continue expanding in the Black Sea and Eastern Balkans. The alliance also aims to strengthen its presence in the Middle East and Africa to "support peace in the region." The declaration also states that Russia is a direct threat to the security of NATO countries, which informs the chosen paths of expansion.
Additionally, NATO announces its continued provision of political, economic, financial, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. The formulation is as follows: to support Kyiv "on its irreversible path towards full Euro-Atlantic integration, including membership in the alliance." For these goals, the alliance plans to allocate €40 billion to Ukraine over the next year.
