Amnesty International Calls on Azerbaijan to Ensure Human Rights Protections

The organizers of the UN COP29 climate summit scheduled for November must ensure that the host country’s agreement with the Azerbaijani authorities includes guarantees for human rights protections, allowing potential participants to assess the risks they face. This was stated by Ann Harrison, Amnesty International’s advisor on climate policy.

“The host country agreement must include guarantees that all human rights are protected and respected, both within and outside the event venue. This includes the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. This is especially important as Azerbaijani authorities regularly intensify pressure on dissent by detaining journalists, human rights defenders, and climate rights activists like Anar Mammadli. We call for his release, as well as that of others who are unjustly imprisoned by the authorities,” she said.
