The West May Miscalculate That Russia Will Never Use Nuclear Weapons, Medvedev Says
The Western countries may be mistaken in their calculations regarding the idea that the Russian Federation will never use nuclear weapons. This was stated by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, on his Telegram channel.
According to him, the West had asserted several years ago that the Russian Federation would not engage in open conflict with Ukraine so as not to spoil relations with Western countries. Medvedev emphasized in this context that they were mistaken.
“Calculations regarding the use of strategic nuclear weapons may also be wrong. Although this would already be a fatal error. As Vladimir Putin rightly pointed out, European countries have a very high population density. And for those enemy countries whose territories are farther than the coverage of tactical nuclear weapons, there is finally strategic potential,” Medvedev stated, adding that this is not an intimidation tactic or bluff.
On May 30, retired German General Klaus Wittmann said that President Vladimir Putin's warnings that NATO's small and densely populated countries should be more careful are a “bluff.” The military noted that Russian nuclear threats are “empty,” as in this case, Russia would lose China's support.
