Human Rights Defender on Incident Involving the Catholicos
The Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Anahit Manasyan, expressed her readiness to act as a bridge between the church and the state. She made this statement during a press briefing at the National Assembly, addressing the incident that took place in Sardarapat involving His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.
On May 28, it was reported that police had obstructed the Catholicos and a group of clergy from entering Sardarapat.
"I want to specifically note that the historical role of our church is enshrined in the Constitution of Armenia, and it is very important that the relations between the state and the church are truly harmonious. I believe that this harmony has been disrupted; it is impossible not to see all of this. I, as an apolitical structure, am ready to be that bridge to resolve all possible issues," stated Manasyan.
She emphasized that she would not respond emotionally to this issue, as she is bound by the rules of professional ethics, but assured that she has demanded answers from state bodies to understand what has transpired. She also plans to speak with representatives of the church regarding the same matter.
"Both sides need to be heard in order to understand the questions," said Manasyan.
The Defender noted that although she is a follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church, her statements must be balanced to avoid offending individuals of other religious beliefs.
