VIDEO: Armed Forces Storm Mexican Embassy in Ecuador; Diplomats Injured
Mexican diplomats suffered injuries during an assault on the embassy in Ecuador when armed forces stormed the building to arrest the former Ecuadorian vice president taking refuge there. Alicia Bárcena, the country's foreign minister, reported this on social media.
“In consultation with President López Obrador, considering the blatant violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations and the injuries sustained by Mexican diplomatic personnel in Ecuador, Mexico announces the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with Ecuador,” she wrote.
Previously, Ecuadorian authorities had arrested former vice president Jorge Glas, who was located in the Mexican embassy in Quito. The Mexican government was preparing to grant Glas political asylum, but the Ecuadorian foreign ministry insisted on handing the politician over to justice.
The diplomatic mission had not allowed police to enter its premises to arrest Glas. On the evening of April 5, law enforcement raided the Mexican embassy in Quito and arrested Glas. The former vice president of Ecuador is accused of corruption. He has already served a sentence in prison from 2017 to 2022.
Earlier, Mexico had handed over major drug lord Ovidio Guzmán López to the United States. This decision was the latest step in the Mexican Ministry of Justice's fight against the Sinaloa cartel.
