The State Plans to Modernize Existing Landfills Before Constructing New Ones
In 8 regions of Armenia, as well as in Yerevan, the state will modernize and improve existing landfills before constructing new sanitary landfills. The government made this decision during today’s meeting.
The project mentions that with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a sanitary landfill compliant with EU standards will be built in Yerevan, and the existing landfill in the city will be closed. Additionally, with EBRD’s support, the program for the 'Integrated Waste Management System in 8 Regions of Armenia' will be implemented, which will area-segment the country in terms of solid waste management and create an institutional and management framework.
'Considering that the construction of new sanitary landfills will take considerable time, there is a critical need to enhance the existing landfills,' states the project. The state aims to ensure environmentally safe conditions and reduce or neutralize the negative and hazardous impacts of landfills on human health and the environment.
