Powerful Eruption Occurs on the Sun on New Year's Eve
On New Year’s Eve, a powerful eruption occurred on the Sun, although it is not expected to cause any phenomena on Earth. This information comes from the website of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The eruption is the first significant explosion of the current solar cycle. "The explosion is approximately 2 times more powerful than the previous record events of this cycle. According to preliminary classification, the eruption has been assigned an X5.0 rating. The previously most powerful eruption was rated at X2.8," the report states.
According to scientists, the cause of the eruption was the accumulation of magnetic and electric energy in the solar corona due to the movement of sunspots. It has been reported that predicting the eruption was impossible because the area where the explosion occurred is on the far side of the Sun and is invisible to Earth-based instruments.
The laboratory staff have not ruled out that several significant explosions may have already occurred on the opposite side before reaching the Sun’s visible side, remaining hidden from Earthly instruments. In this case, a series of eruptions could continue over the coming days.
It is emphasized that the impact of the explosion on our planet is fully excluded, as it occurred on the eastern edge of the Sun, at a considerable distance from the Sun-Earth line.
