Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev: Armenia Has Not Fulfilled Its Obligations
Currently, there are very good opportunities for a peace agenda in the region. This was stated today by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev during a meeting with Pia Kauma, the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Azerbaijani media report this information.
The country's leader noted that new realities have emerged in the South Caucasus region. Ilham Aliyev emphasized that the recent events in the region should be viewed in the context of more than 30 years of occupation and Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan; ignoring the implications of this occupation and aggression would be incorrect when discussing the future of the region.
According to Aliyev, Armenia was aiming to perpetuate the occupation of Azerbaijani lands. “The mediation missions carried out during the occupation were absolutely unsuccessful; the consequences of the occupation and aggression were not eliminated,” he said.
In Aliyev's view, Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations stemming from the statement of the trilateral agreement of 2020: “Thus, Armenia has not only failed to withdraw its armed forces from the territories of Karabakh, but has even purposefully used these areas for the transportation of military equipment, personnel, and mines. Moreover, Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations to establish communication between Eastern Zangezur and Nakhchivan,” he added.
According to the President of Azerbaijan, these issues are now in the past, and currently, there are very good opportunities for a peace agenda in the region. He stated that after the 44-day war, it was Azerbaijan that initiated the peace treaty and the principles forming its basis.
The country’s leader announced that although Azerbaijan is presenting a clear and transparent plan regarding coexistence and the right of return, Armenia is rejecting the right of Azerbaijanis to return to Armenia and has not presented any viewpoints in this regard.
