Bob Menendez and His Wife Released on Bail; Senator Pleads Not Guilty
U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, who is facing corruption charges, has been released on bail in a courtroom alongside his wife and two other defendants. According to РИА Новости, Menendez was required to pay a $100,000 bail, while his wife was ordered to pay $250,000. The couple is subjected to travel restrictions, allowing Menendez to only travel abroad for official business.
The couple must surrender their personal passports and will remain under supervision until the trial. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 2.
Menendez has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of accepting bribes in cash and gold bars in exchange for promoting Egyptian interests and using his political influence to benefit local businesses.
This marks the first time Menendez faced a federal court in Manhattan just days after prosecutors released a sweeping indictment related to corruption against the Democratic senator. Menendez stated that the allegations of abusing his power for personal gain are baseless. He expressed confidence in his eventual acquittal and has stated he has no intention of resigning from the Senate.
Prosecutors allege that Menendez has repeatedly acted in favor of Egypt's authoritarian government. They further claim that Menendez attempted to interfere in criminal investigations related to his associates, including requesting the appointment of a federal prosecutor in New Jersey.
