Scholz Calls for Restraint from Any Military Escalation in Phone Conversation with Pashinyan
The German government's press and information office has issued a statement regarding a phone conversation between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
“Chancellor Scholz spoke today with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The focus was on the heightened tensions in the border areas between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Chancellor expressed deep concern over the steadily increasing tensions over the past weeks, particularly regarding the movement of military units.
The Federal Government strongly calls for restraint from any military escalation. It is now essential to reach a swift agreement on providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, including the opening of the Lachin Corridor. The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan can only be resolved through diplomatic means; all parties must work constructively towards this goal without delay,” the statement read.
Earlier, the Prime Minister's Office of Armenia reported on the phone call between the Prime Minister and the German Chancellor. “The interlocutors discussed issues related to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh due to the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the accumulation of Azerbaijani troops around Nagorno-Karabakh, and trends of increasing tension along the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border.
Prime Minister Pashinyan reaffirmed his commitment to resolving all issues exclusively through diplomatic means and in a constructive atmosphere, based on the agreements reached on October 6, 2022, in Prague and May 14, 2023, in Brussels. Chancellor Scholz noted his readiness to support efforts aimed at establishing peace and stability in the region. Prime Minister Pashinyan emphasized his readiness for urgent discussions aimed at reducing tensions with the President of Azerbaijan.”
