Arsenyan: ‘Serj Sargsyan’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Hungary was short-sighted’

During the meeting of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, Gurgen Arsenyan, a member of the ‘Civil Contract’ faction, addressed Serj Sargsyan's decision to sever relations with Hungary in 2012, describing it as short-sighted. He recalled that Armenia severed its ties with Hungary following the extradition of Ramil Safarov, who had killed Armenian soldier Gurgen Margaryan.

“What does the Hungarian people have to do with the responsibility of the decision made by their leader? Nothing. If you want to express our negative attitude toward that act on behalf of Armenia, show that attitude toward the leader, Orbán, not the Hungarian people. Because severing diplomatic relations with a country means creating a rift between two peoples,” he stated, adding that the Hungarian people do not deserve this.

“I viewed it at that time as a manifestation of a statesman's short-sightedness,” he concluded.
