Several Thousand Homes on the Brink of Collapse: Details from the City of Jebla
Searches for survivors amid the rubble of collapsed buildings in northwest Syria continue following the earthquake, even as the likelihood of finding more survivors diminishes, according to General Major Safwan Bahhlul, head of the Civil Defense of the Arab Republic.
“In the city of Jebla, near Latakia, 11 people have been rescued five days after the disaster, while another nine remain trapped under the rubble,” he stated. Previously, 34 bodies had been recovered. According to him, the operation took place in a collapsed house in the Reyhavi neighborhood.
“The scale of the disaster is enormous,” Bahhlul said. “There are several thousand homes that are on the brink of collapse, while others need urgent renovations.” He also noted that war-torn Syria requires assistance, specifically spare parts for construction equipment to expedite rescue efforts; otherwise, time will be lost.
