UK to Designate Iran's IRGC as Terrorist Organization
The British authorities are preparing to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the elite units of Iran's armed forces, as a terrorist organization in the coming weeks. This was reported on Monday by The Daily Telegraph, citing sources.
If the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is included in the list of terrorist organizations, belonging to the corps, participating in its activities, wearing its insignia, and supporting its operations would become a criminal offense in the United Kingdom. The publication noted that the move to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization is supported by Home Secretary Suella Braverman and her deputy Tom Tugendhat, who is considered the main architect of the initiative.
Since the adoption of relevant legislation in 2000, a total of 78 organizations have been designated as terrorist groups in the UK.
In December, the European Union imposed sanctions against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for “executions and violence against innocent people.” Prior to this, EU authorities had announced they were considering the possibility of including the IRGC in the terrorist list. The United States designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization in 2019.
