VIDEO: Lava from the Canary Islands Volcano Reaches the Ocean

In the Spanish island of Palma, part of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, the lava flow from the erupting Cumbre Vieja volcano has reached the ocean after days of activity. The interaction of lava with saltwater has resulted in the release of harmful gases, reports El País.

The lava has reached the waters near the shores of the town of Tazacorte, taking five days to make its way to the ocean. The Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on September 19, triggering heightened seismic activity in the area, with more than 21,000 recorded underground shocks.

The natural disaster has destroyed approximately 450 buildings, and around 6,000 people have been evacuated. It is noteworthy that the last eruption on the island occurred in 1971.
