The cause of the explosion in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea is, according to preliminary assumptions by experts, a volcanic eruption. This information is reported by minval.az, referencing a statement from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
The statement particularly notes that currently specialists from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Seismological Service’s Republican Center are investigating the cause of the explosion that occurred in the sea. 'According to the preliminary assumption of the specialists, the cause of the explosion is a volcanic eruption.'
As earlier reported by Tert.am, a powerful explosion was heard in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea. The explosion took place at the 'Umid' gas field, located 75 kilometers from Baku, at a depth of 170 kilometers.
Local media have reported that there has been no official confirmation of the incident. However, photos and videos from the scene have been published on social media, showing moments of the fire outbreak.
Azerbaijan's largest oil and gas company, SOCAR, reported that there were no accidents at their production platforms, and operations are proceeding as normal.
