What Biden Plans to Do in His First 100 Days as President
The newly elected president's primary challenge will be the adoption of a $2 trillion economic relief package. This was reported by the Voice of America.
According to a long-standing tradition since President Franklin Roosevelt, all U.S. presidents are assessed on the actions they undertake during their first 100 days in office.
Experts believe that newly elected President Joe Biden is determined to gain approval from Congress for a significant portion of his proposed agenda right from the start of his term. According to Dan Mahaffee, Vice President and Director of Policy at the Center for Presidential Power and Congress, Biden’s commitment is evidenced by the substantial $2 trillion economic relief package he has put forth. However, Biden will have to operate under a much more fragile majority in both chambers of Congress compared to Barack Obama.
Mahaffee thinks that Biden's agenda is even more ambitious due to the serious challenges present in the healthcare and economic sectors. A significant part of his plan relates to direct payments and other measures to support affected individuals and their families, amounting to a total of $1 trillion.
Biden’s plan also includes $440 billion in direct assistance to small businesses and local governments. However, this package is not the only measure Biden intends to implement in the coming months; there are other priorities as well.
Foreign Policy
Biden has promised to restore relations with allies and other countries whose ties have frayed under Trump’s “America First” policy. He also plans to host an international summit dedicated to combating corruption and nationalist aggression.
Justice Sector Reforms
In response to public protests against the police killings of unarmed African Americans, Biden has pledged to create a national commission to oversee police actions and work towards de-escalation by developing a strategy to build trust between law enforcement and local communities.
Environment
Biden has indicated that he will rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and take further steps to ensure that the United States is a global leader in climate change mitigation.
Taxation
The newly elected president intends to review the massive corporate tax cuts implemented by Trump, which reduced corporate taxes from 35 percent to 21 percent. He also wants to increase income taxes on the wealthiest Americans.
Immigration
Following the Trump administration, which clearly obstructed pathways to immigration in the United States, Biden’s administration will propose radical reforms in immigration policy, allowing over 11 million undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship.
According to Mahaffee, Biden can count on cooperation with Congress from the very first day of his administration, especially concerning economic matters. He notes that there is a consensus in Congress, despite the 50-50 distribution of Senate seats, that action is needed to rebuild the economy.
