New Methodology for Calculating Property Tax on Electric Vehicles and Its Impact

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminds that starting from April 1, a uniform methodology for calculating property tax on electric vehicles has come into effect. Drivers of electric vehicles can now view the vehicle registration certificate on the roadpolice.am platform, reflecting the reduced power of the engine.

Previously, the calculation was based on the peak power of the electric vehicle’s engine, which was higher than the actual power available under operational conditions. With the new approach, the calculation is performed as follows: if the vehicle has an electronic passport, the information specified there is used for calculating the property tax; in the absence of such a document, for power up to and including 250 horsepower, the number is divided by 1.5. For power exceeding 251 horsepower, the calculation is done in two parts: the first 250 horsepower is divided by 1.5, while the remainder is divided by 2.5, and then the resulting amounts are summed up.

The new procedure for calculating the power of electric vehicle engines has significantly eased the financial burden on drivers. According to the drivers, before the Government’s decision came into effect, many citizens avoided purchasing electric vehicles with higher power due to the associated high property tax.

The objective of the new methodology for calculating property tax on electric vehicles, implemented by the initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is to make the process more predictable and understandable for citizens.
