The U.S. Plans to Resume Diplomatic Presence in Syria
Lilit A.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has informed Congress of its intention to resume operations at the U.S. embassy in Damascus, which was closed in 2012 during the civil war.
According to the Associated Press, the State Department has adopted a phased approach to the reopening of the mission. Preparations are set to begin in 15 days, though the timeline for American personnel returning to Damascus has yet to be clarified.
It is noted that the matter of reopening the embassy has been handled by the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, Tom Barak, who is actively working with the new leadership in Syria.
