Aliyev: A Peace Agreement Will Be Signed If Armenia Amends Its Constitution

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has stated that the main condition for signing a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan is the amendment of Armenia's constitution, according to the Azerbaijani news site 1news.

“Azerbaijan will sign a peace agreement with Armenia immediately after Yerevan makes changes to its constitution. Baku and Yerevan have already reached a peace agreement in Washington right after the accord, and the formalities depend on Armenia. The sooner constitutional amendments are made and the territorial claims against Azerbaijan are eliminated, the sooner the peace agreement will be signed,” the media quoted Aliyev as saying.

On August 8, 2025, following a meeting between Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, a declaration was adopted regarding the preliminary signing of an agreed text of the peace and inter-state relations agreement between the two countries. The Armenian side has also agreed to cooperate with the United States and third parties to create “Trump’s Roadmap for International Peace and Prosperity.”
