US Imposes New Sanctions Against Iran
According to a statement from the US Department of the Treasury, the United States has imposed a new sanctions package against Iran and individuals linked to terrorism. Seven Iranian individuals and at least one organization are included in the sanctions list.
Among those sanctioned is Iran's Minister of Internal Affairs, Eskandar Momeni, who oversees law enforcement agencies. The US Treasury Department has stated that these organizations are responsible for the deaths of thousands of peaceful protesters.
The sanctions also target Iranian investor Babak Morteza Zanjani, who is accused by Washington of embezzling billions of dollars from oil exports and financing projects associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bencin has stated that the Iranian government spends oil revenues on its nuclear program, missile development, and support for "terrorist proxies" instead of improving the country. He added that the Trump administration will continue to impose sanctions on Iranian networks, corrupt elites, and schemes to evade restrictions, including the use of digital assets.
