IAEA Holds Emergency Meeting Due to Nuclear Safety Concerns in Ukraine
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has convened an emergency meeting due to the rapid deterioration of nuclear safety in Ukraine, as reported by Bloomberg.
The IAEA's board of governors has been called to an urgent session in Vienna following the severe strikes on the country's electrical grid by Russia, which have deprived three functioning nuclear power plants (Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and Yuzhnoukrainsk) of stable external electricity supply.
Peter Potman, the Netherlands' ambassador to the IAEA who requested the extraordinary meeting, stated that the prospect of a nuclear accident is "literally at the doorstep of reality."
“Any damage to this infrastructure disrupts nuclear safety and must be prevented. All efforts should be directed towards ensuring the uninterrupted and safe supply of electricity,” emphasized Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA.
IAEA inspectors are currently conducting checks at key substations connected to the power plants. They are paying special attention to ten critical components, as their failure could lead to a nationwide power outage and a radiological emergency.
