Death Toll from Heavy Snowfall in the U.S. Continues to Rise

The death toll from the heavy snowfall in the United States has reached 85, reports RIA Novosti citing the Associated Press.

According to state authorities, the storm has taken lives in various regions, rising from the previous day's count of 73. Most of the fatalities have been reported in southern states such as Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, which rarely experience such severe winter conditions. Residents in these states were unprepared for the extreme weather, exacerbating the storm's impact.

Causes of death include, among others, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, and road traffic accidents involving vehicles, sleds, and snowplows. Authorities are continuing to count the victims and clear the aftermath of the storm.

As reported by the 'Vzglyad' newspaper, Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the Russian State Duma, has proposed to express condolences to the U.S. Congress and to the families of those who perished due to the heavy snowfall.
