Iran Summons German Ambassador Following Friedrich Merz's Statements

The German ambassador Axel Dittmann has been summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry following statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which the Islamic Republic has deemed provocative.

On Wednesday, during a joint press conference with Romanian Prime Minister Iulian Bulai, Merz expressed regret that some EU countries are not prepared to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization and emphasized Germany's desire to exert maximum pressure on Iran.

“In light of the German Chancellor's interventionist statements against Iran and the provocative stance of that country's authorities towards the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the German ambassador Axel Dittmann was summoned to the Foreign Ministry by the assistant Foreign Minister and head of the Western Europe department, Alireza Yousefi,” the agency reported.

Today, the EU's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU has decided to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization. Earlier, Merz stated that Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union by 2027.
