Baku Develops International Energy Corridor between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Europe

Construction has begun on the "Zangezur" line, which aims to connect the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to Azerbaijan's main power grid and establish an international energy corridor between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Europe.

The Azerenerji OJSC has announced that, under the direction of the country's leadership, the company is constructing a 74-kilometer, 330-kilovolt double-circuit high-voltage power transmission line from Jabrayil to Agbend with a capacity of 1000 megawatts. Construction is also underway for a 105-kilometer line stretching from Nakhchivan to the Ordubad border.

The line runs along the Araz River, traversing mountainous and rocky terrain in certain sections. The work is being carried out in extremely challenging conditions and harsh climatic environments.

The next phase of the project includes the construction of an additional 44-kilometer power transmission line through the Zangezur corridor, which will later connect to the lines leading to Agbend and Ordubad. A new 330-kilovolt substation will also be built in the city of Nakhchivan. For this purpose, forty-nine hectares of land have already been allocated, and mobilization efforts have begun.

Further strategic plans within the Azerbaijan-Turkey-Europe energy corridor project include the construction of a 230-kilometer, 400-kilovolt power transmission line from Nakhchivan to Turkey, as well as the establishment of the country's first 400-kilovolt converter substation.

This project is strategically significant for the full integration of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic into the unified electricity grid of the country, eliminating dependency on foreign sources for frequency regulation, and providing opportunities for entering European energy markets. It is considered one of the largest energy projects in the history of Azerbaijan.
