Europe Cannot Defend Itself Without the US, NATO Secretary General
During a discussion with Members of the European Parliament in the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on the EU to stop dreaming that it can defend itself without the United States.
“And if anyone here thinks again that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the United States, keep dreaming. You cannot. We cannot. We need each other. But for Europe, if you really want to go it alone, and those of you who want that, forget about it. You will never achieve that with a defense spending of 5% of GDP. It will be 10%. You will have to build your own nuclear arsenal. That costs billions and billions of euros. You will lose them. At that point, you will lose the very essence of our freedom, which is the US nuclear umbrella,” he said.
Earlier, in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump criticized Europe, stating that it is moving in the wrong direction and called the US the economic engine of the planet.
According to Politico, after Trump’s speech in Davos, a European diplomat stated that the American dream for Europe is dead.
