Alexanyan on Possible Removal of Russian Border Guards from Akhuryan Border Checkpoint
Vahagn Alexanyan, a member of the 'Civil Contract' faction, addressed reports regarding the possible removal of Russian border guards from the Akhuryan border checkpoint and the transfer of control to the Armenian side during a press briefing.
Alexanyan emphasized that there is currently no official information on this matter. However, he highlighted the state policy of gradually implementing border control along the entire border of the Republic of Armenia by its own forces.
"We are trying to ensure that we carry out our border control ourselves along the entire border of the Republic of Armenia, and we are gradually moving towards the full realization of our border control, naturally expressing gratitude to the relevant services of Russia, which have provided this service," he stated.
He reminded that this process began at the Zvartnots airport, continued at the border with Iran, and is now ongoing towards the development of domestic capacities.
Regarding the possibility of Russian border guards exiting the Armenian-Turkish border, Alexanyan stated that he does not have specific information about the ongoing process in that area, but there will be an official announcement in case of such a step.
"Our vision, like that of any state, is to personally carry out the control of our borders and customs points, and we are no exception in this regard, and we also have such aspirations," he concluded.
