Criticism of Trump's Tariffs in the U.S.
The leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, has announced that his party will attempt to halt the imposition of tariffs on European countries, which the U.S. president links to the situation surrounding Greenland.
According to Schumer, the administration’s tariff policy has already led to rising prices and harmed the American economy. He emphasized that further actions in this direction would only worsen the situation.
“Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs have already hit the U.S. economy. Now he is trying to deepen that damage by imposing tariffs on our close allies as part of his effort to gain control over Greenland,” the senator stated.
Schumer has informed that Senate Democrats will introduce a bill aimed at blocking tariffs before they inflict additional harm to the U.S. economy and relations with European partners.
Currently, the Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress, holding 53 seats in the 100-seat Senate and 218 seats in the 435-seat House of Representatives.
Nevertheless, some Republicans are also expressing dissatisfaction with Trump’s tariff plans. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski has called the proposed tariffs pointless and misguided. “These measures will alienate key European allies and will not strengthen U.S. national security,” she noted.
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis stated that such policies undermine NATO unity and benefit the U.S. geopolitical rivals. According to him, imposing tariffs on allies that have sent a limited number of troops to Greenland for training exercises harms U.S. interests, American businesses, and transatlantic relations.
