Aleppo Airport and Educational Institutions Remain Closed
The General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Syria has announced an extension of the suspension of flights to and from Aleppo International Airport until January 8, 2026, at 23:00. This was reported by Syria TV.
The Civil Aviation Authority clarified that the decision is a temporary precautionary measure related to ongoing developments.
During the suspension period, scheduled flights will be redirected to Damascus International Airport until necessary technical and security assessments are completed.
The Aleppo governor's office has also announced the suspension of classes in schools and universities in the city on January 8.
The Syrian government, in a statement regarding the situation in Aleppo, has demanded the withdrawal of armed groups from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods.
The Syrian government emphasized that the protection of all citizens, including Kurdish citizens, is a fundamental national and legal responsibility and is carried out without any discrimination.
The statement mentioned that the relevant authorities confirm that those displaced from the tension zones are exclusively civilians—all Kurdish citizens—who have left their homes fearing the escalation of tensions. They have taken refuge in areas under the control of the state and its official institutions.
“This is clear evidence of Syria’s trust in Kurdish citizens and its ability to ensure their protection and safety, and it refutes claims of threats or targeting against them,” the statement said.
On January 6, clashes began between the SDF and the Syrian army in Aleppo, resulting in civilian casualties and extensive material damage.
