Mariah Carey Wins Court Case: Plaintiffs Ordered to Pay $92,000

An American court has ordered musicians Andy Stone and Troy Powers to pay $92,000 in damages to singer Mariah Carey after they attempted to accuse her of copyright infringement regarding the famous Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” reports TMZ, citing court documents.

The plaintiffs claimed that Carey's 1994 hit copied their eponymous work, which was recorded by Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1989. They demanded $20 million in damages. However, in March, a Los Angeles court dismissed their claims, deeming the lawsuit baseless. The judge noted that the songs differ significantly in musical content and only share a holiday theme and the same title, which cannot be protected by copyright on its own.

The court has made a final decision, requiring Stone and Powers not only to withdraw their claims but also to cover legal costs. The total damages awarded to Carey and the other defendants amounted to $110,000, with $92,000 allocated directly to the singer. This ruling marks a complete legal victory for Carey and protects her most successful commercial project, which generates tens of millions of dollars annually.
