Trump Threatens Macron with Tariffs if Drug Prices Are Not Raised

US President Donald Trump claimed that he convinced his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to raise drug prices by threatening to impose a 25% tariff on French imports.

“I spoke with a very good man, President Macron of France, and I said, ‘Emmanuel, you have to raise drug prices.’ He said, ‘No, no, we’re not going to do that.’ I said, ‘If you don’t, I will impose a 25% tariff on everything you sell to the United States from France, which is nearly 20 times more than I’m asking for drugs,’” Trump told reporters.

In October, Trump’s administration launched an investigation into pharmaceutical pricing in other countries, threatening tariffs on nations that pay significantly less for the import of American pharmaceuticals.
