Syrian Military Forces Launch Operation Against Islamic State

Syrian security forces have launched an operation against the Islamic State (IS) in the Palmyra region. On December 13, Pentagon spokesperson Shawn Parnell announced that two American service members and one civilian translator were critically injured during the operation against IS in the city of Palmyra. Three additional Americans were also wounded. The Defense Department stated that the attack on the servicemen was a result of a carefully planned ambush by terrorist fighters.

U.S. President Donald Trump promised that serious countermeasures would be taken following the IS operations against American troops in Syria. The White House leader noted that the incident in Syria was a “trap.” The attack occurred in a highly dangerous area of the country, which is completely out of the control of Syrian government forces.

Previously, over 70 individuals connected with IS have been arrested in Syria.
