How Much Territory Has Russia Captured in Ukraine So Far: The Economist

In the last three years, Russian forces have managed to capture only 1.45% of Ukraine's territory, while Russia's losses in personnel are comparable to their 'successes.' According to preliminary data, Russia may have lost up to 1% of its pre-war adult male population in the conflict, reports The Economist.

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, Russian casualties on the battlefield have ranged between 1 to 1.35 million people. The publication has drawn this conclusion based on open data, information from sources, and reports. It is noted that Russian losses exceed the total number of U.S. soldiers killed and wounded during the entire Second World War.

Additionally, Russians managed to capture 4,562 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025, and 3,734 square kilometers in 2024. In November 2025, Russia recorded its largest monthly advance within a year, having captured 690 square kilometers.

However, despite the fact that Russia's advance accelerated slightly in 2025 due to numerous issues in Ukraine, the overall progress of Russian forces remains very slow. In total, over the past three years, since the autumn of 2022, Russia has managed to capture only an additional 1.45% of Ukrainian territory. According to the latest data from Ukraine's General Staff, the total combat losses of the Russian invaders have reached 1.2 million people.
