Every Official Talking About 'Sports Achievements' Should Keep These Numbers in Mind: Arthur Nazaryan
In Yerevan, there are about 200,000 children aged 6 to 18. If we want at least half of them to engage in sports three times a week, the city needs at least 650 sports facilities, such as gyms or playgrounds. This was announced by Arthur Nazaryan, the Secretary General of the Basketball Federation of Armenia, on Facebook.
Since the collapse of the USSR, dozens of sports schools have closed in Yerevan. Today, only about 24 to 25 sports schools remain, most of which lack adequate infrastructure or modern gymnasiums. The number of private sports centers is also low. In total, Yerevan currently has the capacity to train a maximum of 20,000 to 25,000 children, not the 100,000 that would be ideal.
This is what we need to consider if we want sports to become widespread. Every official who speaks about 'sports achievements' should keep these numbers in mind and stop misleading people with just a few medals from certain sports.
P.S. The situation is even worse in the provinces, which I will address later.
