The Number of Girls in Armenian Sports is Sadly Alarmingly Low: Arthur Nazaryan
The number of girls in Armenian sports is sadly alarmingly low. Currently, the percentage of girls participating in sports in Armenia does not exceed 10% of the total number of athletes. This not only represents poor statistics but also signifies serious issues regarding our country's health, education, and value systems. This was highlighted by Arthur Nazaryan, the Secretary General of the Basketball Federation of Armenia, in a Facebook post.
“Even in very conservative countries, the participation of women in sports reaches 25-30%, while in leading countries, it approaches 50%. In Armenia, with the exception of 3-4 organizations, almost everyone has forgotten that women's sports exist. There are insufficient programs, there are no clear targets, there is no consistent state policy, and there is also a lack of public discussion.”
Nazaryan questioned, “When was the last time you heard any official or political figure speak seriously about the issues of women's sports—with numbers, programs, and commitments? They talk about victories, medals, and patriotism...”
