Changes to Childbirth Benefit Amounts Expected
Changes are anticipated in the process of providing state benefits related to childbirth. The government has approved a draft law, which is currently in the National Assembly. After being adopted and ratified by the National Assembly, the changes will come into effect.
Perhaps the most significant change is the benefit for the 3rd child and each subsequent child. This was announced at a press conference by Anahit Galstyan, head of the Pension Security and Other Monetary Payments Department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. She reminded that under a legal act adopted in 2021, from January 1, 2022, a monthly financial support of 50,000 AMD is provided to families for the 3rd child and each subsequent child until the child reaches the age of 6.
“This program has been implemented for four years, and this year the national institute of the ministry conducted a study, which showed that the initiative has a positive impact on the demographic situation. Accordingly, it has been decided to establish a separate type of state benefit. Four benefits will now be provided in connection with childbirth instead of the previous three. The first is the maternity benefit, which is given to the pregnant woman; the second is a one-time childbirth benefit; the third is the childcare benefit for children under two years old; and the fourth is the state benefit for the third and each subsequent child,” noted Anahit Galstyan.
She added that until now, the one-time childbirth benefit was given based on the order of the child: a one-time benefit of 300,000 AMD is provided for the first and second children, one million for the third and fourth children, and one million 500 thousand for five or more children.
“When we turn the 50,000 AMD financial support into a state benefit, we are also revising the one-time childbirth benefit. It is planned to equalize the amount of the one-time childbirth benefit, setting it at 500,000 AMD regardless of the order of the child,” Anahit Galstyan stated.
