Europe Must Continue to Pressure Russia, Says Ursula von der Leyen

Europe must continue to exert pressure on Russia, as it is determined to "redraw the map permanently" and regain its lost "spheres of influence". This statement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

She also warned that the rapidly evolving peace talks led by the United States are increasing Moscow's prospects for economic advantages, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Von der Leyen's remarks came at a time when the Kremlin announced its intention to reject a peace plan developed in Geneva during negotiations between U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

In her speech, von der Leyen opposed restricting the number of Ukrainian armed forces, a contentious issue in the negotiations, and called for robust security guarantees to prevent the repetition of a large-scale invasion.

Western allies are discussing the possibility of deploying multinational forces in Ukraine to strengthen deterrence against Russia after the end of the war. Moscow has rejected this idea.

The President of the European Commission also emphasized the urgent need to support Ukraine's financial and military needs, which are estimated at €135 billion for 2026 and 2027.

Von der Leyen concluded her speech by reiterating her call to increase pressure on Moscow and compel it to cease hostilities.
