Turkey's Foreign Minister: Turkey Will Normalize Relations with Armenia If Azerbaijan Signs Peace Agreement

Turkey is prepared to normalize relations with Armenia, provided that Yerevan and Baku sign a final peace agreement. This was stated by Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

According to Fidan, the pathway to the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations includes key issues regarding amendments to Armenia's Constitution and the proposed communication corridor through southern Armenia, which, he noted, were not included in the pre-signed peace agreement between the parties in Washington on August 8.

He emphasized that after overcoming these "sensitivities" and concluding a final agreement with Baku, Turkey will open its border with Armenia.

Fidan also expressed confidence that Yerevan is demonstrating readiness for regional peace, particularly because it sees Turkey's willingness to normalize relations.

He highlighted that the opening of the border between the two countries and the revitalization of economic relations are of significant importance for Armenia.

Speaking about the reasons why Turkey is not rushing this process, Fidan mentioned that the goal is to avoid the emergence of a new frozen conflict in the South Caucasus. "If we normalize relations with Armenia right now, we would deprive Yerevan of the main incentive to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. This could create the risk of a new frozen conflict, which we do not want," he stated.
