Prosecutor's Office Seeks 2-Month Extension of Samvel Karapetyan's Detention, Lawyer Says

The Prosecutor's Office has submitted a request to extend the detention of businessman Samvel Karapetyan, who has been in custody for about five months, for another two months, according to Aram Vardevanyan, the head of Karapetyan's defense team, during a press conference.

Recalling that the investigative team consists of 53 members, Vardevanyan pointed out that they have been operating since July and are still requesting the court to allow them to conduct a preliminary investigation, while Samvel Karapetyan remains in custody.

"This alone is sufficient for us to say that we are acting outside the scope of the law," Vardevanyan stated.

According to Vardevanyan, the Supreme Court has acted with cosmic speed in this case. "A letter was issued by the Supreme Court on November 13, 2025, which was received on November 14, 2025. The letter, dated 'November 12,' indicates that the Supreme Court's decision will be published on November 13. The head of the group consisting of 53 investigators from the Investigative Committee had the Supreme Court's decision in hand on November 13. The investigator had the decision so early that he was able to familiarize himself with it, make quotations, and file the request on November 13, 2025, at 6:27 PM," the lawyer revealed.

The defense argues that the request for Samvel Karapetyan's detention is illegal. It is worth noting that the hearing regarding the extension of Karapetyan's detention will take place in the Anti-Corruption Court on November 17.
