For Armenia, the issue of EU membership is hypothetical, while the EAEU is a reality: Russian Ambassador
The Armenian authorities are showing interest in participation in the EAEU, and Moscow is ready to support Yerevan in that regard. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopirkin, in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.
He added that membership in the EAEU brings real benefits to Armenia, while the prospects for European integration are quite murky.
Regarding the prospect of EU membership, Kopirkin noted that it is a complex issue, given the complicated procedures which require significant effort and time—some countries have been waiting decades for EU membership. Accordingly, for Armenia, this issue is more of a hypothetical nature.
“As for the EAEU, it is a reality. Armenia is one of the countries that benefits the most from participating in the Eurasian Economic Union. Until now, the Armenian leadership remains interested in participating in the Eurasian integration project. We appreciate this position and consistently demonstrate a clear approach, ready to collaborate closely and provide support. This has also been the case during Armenia's recent presidency in the EAEU,” the Russian ambassador emphasized.
Kopirkin noted that EAEU membership aligns with the interests of the countries and peoples involved in this process. Moreover, it is an open mechanism, which more and more countries are signing agreements on free trade zones. In particular, a free trade agreement with Iran recently came into force.
