Firefighting Operations Continue at Nubarashen landfill, Ministry of Internal Affairs Reports

Firefighting operations continue at the Nubarashen household waste landfill following a fire that broke out last night. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The ministry noted that six firefighting teams from the Yerevan City Administration's Rescue Service and an operational group from the firefighting and rescue operations division were dispatched to the scene. Efforts have been made to extinguish the fire over an area of approximately 2 hectares, which is primarily burning household waste.

Under the directive of the Head of the Rescue Service, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Major General Kamo Tsutsulyan, a firefighting headquarters has been established at the site, led by Colonel Z. Melkonyan, who is temporarily fulfilling the duties of Head of the Yerevan City Rescue Administration.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as of October 10, at 18:20, firefighting operations are still ongoing. The efforts involve 5 firefighting teams, 1 operational group, 25 rescuers, as well as 8 trucks, 3 water tankers, and 3 engineering vehicles from the Yerevan Municipality. A total of 140 trucks of soil have been relocated and approximately 200 tons of water have been discharged.

The ministry has stated that additional information regarding the incident will be provided.

It is noteworthy that Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced in a video posted on his Facebook page that the fire was not incidental but rather intentional. He mentioned that he has spoken with the Director of the National Security Service and the Minister of Internal Affairs, emphasizing that anyone found responsible for the fire will face accountability under the full severity of the law.

The mayor also indicated that the monitoring of entrances and exits to the landfill has been tightened and stressed that this year the first phase of the competition for a household waste recycling plant will be announced, which will definitively close the chapter on the Nubarashen landfill.
