Armenia's Economic Dependency on Russia: President Discusses Relations with the RF
Yerevan and Moscow have established a partnership relationship, with Armenia no longer being the junior sibling of Russia. This was stated by the President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachatryan, in an interview with RTVI.
According to him, Yerevan wants its Russian counterparts to take into account the independent decisions of the Armenian authorities. Khachatryan believes that 'the Armenian government works for the welfare and prosperity of the Armenian people,' and thus the Armenian government should determine how to trade, work, and establish diplomatic relations.
'Armenia is economically dependent on Russia, and Russia is in turn economically dependent on Armenia,' stated Khachatryan.
Khachatryan also commented on the statement made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, who had said in the spring regarding Armenia's intention to join the European Union that a choice would need to be made between the EAEU and the EU since 'it's not possible to sit on two chairs at once.' According to Khachatryan, Armenia has a diversified economy.
