Russia Will Not Return Its Assets Until It Pays War Reparations: Kalas

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, has stated that it is impossible to envision the return of Russian assets frozen within the alliance due to the war in Ukraine, as long as Moscow has not paid the reparations.

“We cannot imagine that if a ceasefire or peace agreement is reached, those assets will be returned to Russia if they do not pay the reparations,” she said.

The EU has announced that approximately 210 billion euros of Russian assets have been frozen under sanctions imposed against Moscow due to the Ukrainian war. Ukraine and several EU countries have urged the EU to seize the assets and use them to support Kyiv. However, major EU players such as France and Germany, along with Belgium, which holds most of the assets, have rejected such calls.
