Iran's Foreign Ministry on the Activation of the Sanctions Reinstatement Mechanism by 'E3'
The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday criticizing the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, collectively known as the 'E3', for activating the so-called 'snapback' mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran, as reported by the Iranian Mehr news agency.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects and condemns the illegal statement made by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom (E3) in the Security Council regarding Resolution 2231 (2015)," the statement read.
"This baseless action, which contradicts the Dispute Resolution Mechanism (DRM) of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is an illegal and unfounded attempt to reinstate annulled resolutions and clearly violates Resolution 2231 (2015). As has been noted in numerous previous communications directed to the UN Security Council, the three European countries have neither legal nor moral authority to invoke this so-called immediate response mechanism. Therefore, their statement is invalid and carries no legal weight," the statement emphasized.
The ministry also noted that the E3’s actions would undermine Iran's relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency and disrupt the authority of the UN Security Council.
