China Will Not Become One of Ukraine's Security Guarantors

China is unlikely to become one of Ukraine's security guarantors, despite Russia's statements about this possibility. This opinion from Chinese experts is quoted by the South China Morning Post.

Analysts believe that Beijing may provide political or diplomatic support to halt hostilities, but it lacks the incentives and resources to offer security guarantees.

The director of the Chinese Horizon Insights Centre, Zhu Junwei, stated that Beijing will not play a significant role in future discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine. He pointed out that there are different types of guarantees and it is unclear what type the Russian side is referring to.

“Any new agreement on security guarantees needs to consider how to make the provisions truly operational,” said the expert. According to him, China may be ready to discuss security measures within the framework of UN mechanisms and to participate in them, “however, there are currently no signs of such participation.”
