Turkey Begins Construction of Railway to Azerbaijan

Turkey will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Kars-Igdir-Aralık-Dilucu railway line connecting Azerbaijan on August 22 in the city of Igdir, Turkey. As reported by Anadolu Agency, this was announced by Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu.

“With the launch of the Zangezur corridor, the east-west route stretching from Beijing to London will become more efficient,” the statement said.

In a written announcement, Uraloglu provided details about the Kars-Igdir-Aralık-Dilucu railway. According to him, this route will significantly strengthen the transport of goods and passengers in eastern Turkey. He noted that the railway will not only enhance Turkey's logistics capabilities but will also boost its role as a geopolitically significant hub in trade routes connecting to Asia.

The head of the agency reported that with the efforts of the Turkish Treasury and the Ministry of Finance, €2.4 billion in external funding has been secured for the realization of the project. He emphasized that this railway is a crucial component of the Zangezur corridor, which ensures connectivity between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan.

“With this line, Turkey and Azerbaijan will have a new railway connection. At the same time, the production potential of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia will reach external markets more quickly, and the tourist potential of the Mediterranean will increase. Moreover, the line will promote the Trans-Caspian and North-South corridors, strengthening the supply and logistic networks of Eurasia, making Turkey a center for regional cooperation. The launch of the Zangezur corridor will also increase economic cooperation in the South Caucasus, and the east-west route stretching from Beijing to London will begin to operate more efficiently. The capabilities for railway and road freight transport in the Middle Corridor will grow,” he added.
